Kanawha County

Although Kanawha County was founded in 1789, the earliest Kanawha Personal Property Tax (PPT) lists available are from 1792. James Jordan moved to the county from Greenbrier probably in the spring of 1798, but didn’t appear on the first PPT lists for the county until 1801, by which time he was living on the Mud River in land that would later become part of Cabell County.

James and his family last appeared on Kanawha PPT lists in 1807. There were no tax lists prepared for the year 1808 due to inaction by the Virginia state General Assembly. See Cabell County PPT lists for years 1809 and after.

Note:

Compared with the 1801 list and based on the number of horses, the 1802 entries for the family of James Jordan probably include both James Jordans, John Jordan, and the last listed William Jordan. William Jordan (with one horse) and William Jordan Sr. (with four horses) are probably not part of the family.

The entire 1806 Kanawha County tax list for surnames beginning with “J” is included above. Based on the entries for 1801 and 1802, it appears that all of the Jordans listed are from the family of James Jordan, except for the second William (with one horse).

Notes:
The second white male above 16 listed for James Jordan Sr. is probably his son Jonathan, born circa 1789, who is listed in his own right in the 1810 Cabell County tax list (as James Sr.’s count goes back to one male over 16).

Based on previous years’ entries, James’ son William is probably the one listed here as Junior. It is useful to note that in the 18th and 19th centuries, the terms “Junior” and “Senior” were often descriptive of relative ages rather than indicators of a father/son relationship. The elder William listed here (William Senr ) is probably not a member of the family.

1808-1810
THERE WAS NO TAX LIST IN 1808. THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY DID NOT PASS TAX-COLLECTION LEGISLATION THAT YEAR.
NO JORDAN IS FOUND ON THE TAX LISTS OF 1809 AND 1810 (JAMES JORDAN AND HIS FAMILY LIVED IN THE SECTION OF KANAWHA COUNTY THAT BECAME CABELL COUNTY IN 1809).

TAX LISTS BEYOND 1810 FOR KANAWHA COUNTY WERE NOT RESEARCHED.
