Sarah Jordan was born circa 1780/1781 probably in Greenbrier County, (West) Virginia, and died on February 2, 1845 probably in Cabell County (West) Virginia. She married Leroy Newman Jr., son of Leroy Newman, in Greenbrier County, (West) Virginia on December 22, 1797. Leroy was born on February 28, 1770 in Westmoreland County, Virginia and died March 6, 1849 in Cabell County, (West) Virginia.  Both Sarah and Leroy are buried in the Jordan graveyard, Cabell County, West Virginia.[1]

Evidence that Sarah Jordan was a daughter of James and Sarah Jordan

  1. ⚠️ Family researchers long ago concluded that Sarah Jordan was the daughter of James Jordan, but no one has provided supporting evidence for that conclusion. No documents from the time, whether land, marriage, or court records offer a definite connection between Sarah Jordan Newman and the James Jordan family. Only the coincidence of time and place provides evidence of a connection: Sarah’s marriage to Leroy Newman was in Greenbrier County when the Jordans lived there; her residence and death in Cabell County coincided with the Jordans being there as well.

Land Records

  • April 6, 1813John Morris Senr. quit claims to Leroy Newman land in Cabell County on a branch of the Mud River.
NB: Newman later sells this land to William Jordan Senr., who has to sue the heirs of John Morris Senr. to recover title.

1 Year of birth for Sarah taken from 1820-1840 censuses and from assumption that she would have been over 15 when married. Date of death and burial location of both Sarah and Leroy are taken from their tombstones, as is Leroy’s date of birth. Date and location of marriage taken from Greenbrier County (West Virginia) marriage records. Names of four children taken from will of Leroy Newman dated June 7, 1845.
NB: Some family researchers mistakenly give Sarah‘s birthdate as February 7, 1772, assuming that she was the daughter of James and Sarah Jordan of Goochland County, Virginia, whose birth was listed in the Douglas Register. For more information see Greenbrier vs Goochland.
